Practice Guideline - HPV Immunization
The CDC has included HPV vaccine as part of its adolescent and adult
immunization schedules published for 2007. MCI has adopted this schedule.
Since the CDC has not yet published its final opinion regarding the HPV
vaccine, in the interim MCI has the following recommendations:
- HPV vaccine will
be available in
clinics at the
discretion of the
physicians at that
site.
- HPV vaccine
should be
recommended to women
ages 11 – 26 at the
provider’s
discretion.
- The vaccine in
given in three doses
at 0, 2, and 6
months.
- Vaccination is
not recommended
during pregnancy. If
a woman is found to
be pregnant after
initiating the
vaccination series,
the remainder of the
3-dose regimen
should be delayed
until after
completion of the
pregnancy.
- Insurance
coverage for HPV
vaccine is not
universal. The
issue of insurance
coverage should be
addressed with
patients before
giving the vaccine.

Variation from
this guideline is always
acceptable, if in the
opinion of the attending
physician, individual
circumstances require
it.
