Mercy: Excellence. Every Day in Every Way.

Mercy Surgical Oncologists (Cancer Surgeons)

Surgical oncologists Jan Franko, MD, PhD, FACS and Charles Goldman, MD, FACS devote the majority of their time to the care of cancer patients. Because of their focus and expertise they are instrumental in bringing together surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to achieve the best benefit for their patients.

ABOUT CANCER and RESOURCES

We encourage all our patients to be well informed. To provide independent information to our patients, we recommend two websites. The National Cancer Institute provides a list of all cancer types and available treatments, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology is a trusted source for patients coping with cancer.

Both Dr. Franko and Dr. Goldman participate in the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG) clinical trials based at Mayo Clinic to deliver benefits of cutting edge research close to their patients in Des Moines area. Active cancer research is coordinated with ICTCR (Iowa Center for Translational and Clinical Research) and Iowa Oncology Research Association in affiliation with the University of Iowa and Des Moines University.

An example of their research is cytoreductive surgery and Hyperthermic Interperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), which is an advanced and extensive surgical procedure combined with a one-time treatment with heated chemotherapy at the end of the operation.
The first HIPEC treatment in the Mercy Medical Center was in December 2008. At the time of this writing the Mercy Medical Center is the only Iowa center offering this therapy.
