Mercy: Excellence. Every Day in Every Way.

Jan Franko, MD, PhD, FACS

Mercy Surgical Oncologist (Cancer Surgeon)

Dr. Franko is a fellowship-trained cancer surgeon with special expertise in management of a wide array of cancers and complex surgical non-cancer diseases. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He joined Mercy in 2008 and offers services in the main campus and at the Katzmann Breast Center.

His specialty includes problems and cancers of the pancreas, liver, stomach, esophagus, melanoma and sarcoma.   A number of patients with colon or rectal cancer, especially advanced, are treated as well. Dr. Franko also offers endocrine surgery (thyroid diseases & thyroid cancer, parathyroid, adrenal gland).

Help is also available for certain patients suffering from stage IV cancers (metastases). A very selected group of patients with metastases limited to liver may be candidates for surgery and enjoy substantially prolonged life, even possible cure. Those with unresectable metastases may be candidates for minimally invasive procedures as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE), or specialized forms of radiation. Certain patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis may be helped by cytoreductive surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC).

During his academic career, Dr. Franko wrote over 40 scientific articles and has given over 60 national and international presentations. Dr. Franko is an active member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society for Surgery of Alimentary Tract, Iowa Oncology Research Association, and others. He is an advanced laparoscopic surgeon and continues to be involved in education.

RESEARCH

To benefit all mankind, ease suffering and save lives, Dr. Franko believes research should be offered to those interested in participating. Patient protection is an absolute priority and is formally overseen by an Institutional Review Board. Active cancer research is coordinated with ICTCR (Iowa Center for Translational and Clinical Research) and Iowa Oncology Research (IORA).
